Due to a paradox, members of the research team at Yaschas Masif have been disappearing and are replaced by red orbs, Rubies of Grief, which hold the lingering regrets of those that are gone. Noel recalls a tale where a past seeress sealed a beast away in order to protect the inhabitants of Paddra. As Noel and Serah lay the spirits to rest, they come across the Yeul who made the fateful decision to seal the beast. She is in anguish over her choice, and Serah wants to show her that she made the right choice in changing history and protecting the people of Paddra. The two defeat the beast, and Yeul thanks them while Noel is disquieted by the ramifications of being able to witness the timelines.

Serah and Noel arrive at the time when Coccoon is foretold to fall, ready to face Caius, and they find that the area is distorted by chaos. They are confronted by a Yeul that speaks through shadows, telling them to stop as they will kill the goddess, but they persist on to change the future. Caius tries to stop them, taunting Serah with the fact that she will die from seeing the changes in the timeline, but they fight him again . . . And again . . . And again . . . Noel eventually reveals the truth that Yeul wanted to be born again in order to see the eternal Caius when she returned, to not leave him alone. After Noel is forced to kill Caius, the two return to Pulse and see the rising of the new Cocoon, full of hope to face a new, bright future.
